British Golf Museum - case study of 2009 renovation 
 
 
A new LED and energy efficient lighting installation with additonal power , ventilation , data , fire alarm , emergency lighting ,voice and audio visual for the British Golf Museum , St Andrews in Fife. The museum sets itself another ambitious target - to significantly improve its energy efficiency. With this in mind, part of the recent refurbishment entailed an upgrade to the air ventilation system, which will effectively reduce the heating consumption. RB Grant Electrical Contractors removed the existing lighting which has been replaced with a combination of fluorescent and LED  lamps to minimise electricity usage. To improve the aesthetics of the galleries, a new lighter ceiling layout has been installed. A complete rewire of the lighting and data in low smoke zero halogen cabling to meet the current standards .
 
 

LED lighting - reduced the cost and energy consumption by 70% . Fluorescent lighting has been used for general lighting and emergency throughout the gallery space . LED spot lights have been used as utility lighting illuminating signage and display for further enhance the impressive gallery . The lights are separated into circuits for gallery opening time and for staff lower level requirements when cleaning or walking through display area which also lowers consumption .

 

Fire protection - complete renewal of existing 2 wire system alarm . To increase the fire protective measures a fully addressable fire alarm system was installed. This system will pin point the source of the smoke detected to help with escape and the fire service locating problem . All exisiting cabling in the gallery has been rewired using low smoke zero halogen to reduce fumes and smoke during a fire .

 

Ventilation system - renewal and addition to existing . To reduce the heat consumption required to provide adequate levels spread evenly around museum . To incorporate sensors and thermostats to analyse background heat and adjust system for optimum output and efficiency .

 

Ceiling design - complete renewal of gallery space ceiling . Lowered white ceiling installation to reduce area to be heated and illuminated . The white tiles add to reflective light source and by lowering the air space to heat and ventilated . Ease of access to utilities which are hidden but accessible for further additions or adaptations .

 

Emergency lighting - incorporation into general lighting . In modern times it is more affective and aesthetically pleasing to add emergency lighting facility into general lighting . The gallery space is adequately illuminated incase of power failure and continues for 3 hours for emergency services or maintenance .
