21/02/10 Local Business Google maps , optimize your site back to blog
If you don’t have your free Google local business listing yet , then why not ? It’s a free advert and an easy way to get on the first page of Google . See my previous post for more information on the importance of claiming you listing . Well done for those of you that do , but have you made sure its optimized to its full potential ? The more information you provide the more impressions you are likely to get which should therefore generate more business . Here are a few tips for success .
We start with the basic information , we all have a company name anyway , but if you have more than 1 locations make sure you determine them distinctly for example “your company Edinburgh “ and “your company Glasgow” . It is always good to place the town in the title , but nothing else as this may be seen as attempting to manipulate your ranking ,
The description section is your chance to sum up the company in 200 letters ( including spaces ) . Its worth spending time to load this section with the most appropriate keywords for your company ,
The category section is probably the most important factor and you should choose these carefully , you can add up to 5 maximum , Even if you consider you only have 1 category think again as the more the better . This link is great for Google’s full list of categories and synonyms and is a informative reference for the additional detail section . If you have a UK listing you may find that you are unable to find an appropriate category , adding a personal one can also be beneficial as you may be the only one who ranks for that term .
You then have the option to specify your opening hours and payment methods .
Upload photos relevant to your company , this may include a picture of your premises , company logo and membership logos . Try to add the full 10 and choose wisely , Google will revolve the picture which is displayed so keep them relevant .
Video section allows you to upload any videos your company may display on you tube . If you don’t have any videos then I would urge you to make one . Window movie maker is very easy to use and you can use the pictures previously uploaded to design a revolving picture video . Its very easy to rank well at the moment for video searches and you should treat the page in the same way as your website , keyword loaded and relevant to your company .
Additional detail section gives the opportunity to add further information about the company . You can use the link for the categories previously suggested for this . In the first section you can add the category and the second the relevant synonyms . You can also add information on parking , brands and additional services offered .
Once you have done all this and your happy with the listing your all finished , well not really . Add more information and keep the listing up to date with any changes in your company . You should avoid changing any basic information as this will require a re-verification process that can take 2 weeks , your listing will rank last during this period and never be seen on the first page . Make sure you drive any happy customers to the site to add reviews . Although it appears that the number of reviews or the score makes little difference to your ranking , its beneficial for potential customers
