FIFE BUSINESS SPARKS SUCCESS article from Fife Free Press . 5 November 2009

RB Grant Electrical Contractors was established in 1974 and over the years has built a reputation for excellent workmanship and customer care, now employing a workforce of forty.

An annual apprenticeship electrician scheme and mentoring programme are recent developments, which will ensure a well-trained workforce for the future. The business has a strong and expanding customer base in both private and contract work.

"In the last six years we have worked hard to develop and expand the business", explains Ronnie Jnr. "It’s a family business and we have a long list of clients in both the private and public sector."

Due to their successful development R.B.Grant opened an office in Kirkcaldy in April this year, primarily to manage contract work in the Central Fife area. Ronnie Grant Jnr is responsible for the day to day running and overall management of this office.

Ronnie has also taken responsibility for ensuring that the business is best placed to meet the ever increasing demands on small businesses, demands which must be met to secure future work and the continued employment of a committed workforce.

Business Gateway has provided invaluable support to Ronnie in developing quality management systems, web audits and sales development.

Ronnie said, "It has been hard work but the recent help and support of the team at Business Gateway has been invaluable. As our customers grow so does the number of our staff so it’s imperative that we keep looking for ways to secure clients all over Central Scotland."

Gillian Reid from Business Gateway commented, "Ronnie understands the importance of outside support and came to Business Gateway for assistance in these areas. Ronnie has taken our advice and support and is actively working towards turning our advice into successful business methods".

St Andrews in Focus

Ronnie Grant talked to Flora Selwyn about his family’s firm,

R B Grant, Electrical Contractors.

“It works for us.”

Registered with the NICEIC, the industry's governing body,     R B Grant is obliged to uphold strict standards of competence. Training in the most up-to-date practices and materials is on-going and rigorous. As Ronnie stresses, electrical equipment is potentially lethal in the wrong hands. Customers must have confidence in their contractors, and NICEIC registration is therefore vital. "The regulations now are very, very different from what they were ten years ago - there are a lot of changes. Most people should get their houses checked every ten years" for their own peace of mind.

Still trading from Denhead, a new office has also been opened in Kirkcaldy. Projects range from simple domestic installations to shops, offices, the NHS, Fife Council; "I can design systems as well as install them." The firm also has apprentices. Everyone is extremely proud of one young man, Scott Fillipovic, who has twice won the Apprentice of the Year award at Adam Smith College in Kirkcaldy, and who is currently the Best Second-year Apprentice in the East of Scotland. He is setting his sights on even higher awards! Ronnie is expecting to have 5 adult and 7 junior apprentices later in the year. "The standard is phenominal now; where before you were getting 16 year-olds leaving school and just wanting to be electricians, you're now getting people who are going to university."

"I can't be as cheap as the man in the street with a white van, because I'll be on courses for the rest of my life" to comply with safety standards in a constantly changing technological world. "Regulations are a difficult thing to explain to people. People say, 'I've lived here for ten years, it's been safe before, why should I change it?' But they don't put these regulations in to make money, they put them in for safety. I take the responsibility. The NICEIC will come out and check us, and they will make sure that we keep to the standard."

20/07/10 Scottish firm hires female apprentice

Article from : Summer 2010 NICEIC Connections

Fife-based RB Grant Electrical Contractors has hired its first female apprentice after she completed a successful period of work experience.

Gail Glancy, 16, (pictured below with company owner Ronnie Grant) started her apprenticeship in June, beginning the process of fulfilling her childhood dream.

"My grandfather was an electrician - I watched him fiddling around with things when I was younger and it seemed really interesting," she said. "I've always wanted to be an electrician and I'm looking forward to going on to get my qualification."

Grant said that Gail would be treated no differently from other apprentices. "There was no consideration as to whether she was a girl or a boy - she was just good," he said.
"But I thought it would be good for us, because apart from one girl in the office we don't employ any women and we have around 50 employees. It might be good to have a girl who can help people who live on their own."

The new recruit has been welcomed by both staff and clients, he added, and has become something of a talking point.

Gail will now spend two years alternating between work and college in five-week blocks, and in her third year will attend college for a single week.

In the previous issue of connections, NICEIC chief operating officer Emma McCarthy called for electrical companies to make more effort to recruit women.

Article from St Andrews Citizen

Published Date: 25 June 2009

A YOUNG apprentice electrician in Fife has scooped top honours at Adam Smith College for the

second year running.

Scott Filipovic (19) has won the 2nd year Apprentice of the Year award, at the Kirkcaldy college,

topping off his success as Apprentice of the Year there last year.

Yesterday (Thursday), he was attending the national competition's regional final in Falkirk.

Scott, who lives with his parents, Philip and Kathleen and brother Graeme in Balmullo, has worked

for electrical contractor R.B. Grant for just over two years and has impressed boss Ronnie with his keeness and aptitude.

"There has been a major change in the quality of apprentices in the last few years, as it's a great alternative to university," he said.

"Scott could have easily chosen that path. He has exceptional skills for his short time in the

electrical industry, is enthusiastic and willing to learn and his communication skills with both his

fellow employees and the clients are a credit to such a young man. He is a very good all-round employee."

Scott's SVQ level 3 in electrical installation course at Adam Smith College is in blocks of five

weeks in the first year and three-week blocks in the second year.

He decided to become and electrician as his father was an engineer and he liked the idea of

having a job where he could use both his hands and his head.

As Ronnie pointed out, his qualification will also allow him to travel and work anywhere in Europe and make employment further afield easier.

St Andrews business praised for bucking the trend

Ronnie Grant of RB Grant with new apprentice Stefan Fraser.

01 October 2009
A ST ANDREWS business has been praised for bucking the trend and taking on a young, inexperienced member of staff at a time when many other companies are shedding jobs.
And last week 16-year-old Stefan Fraser started training for the job he has always wanted when he became an apprentice electrician following a six month work placement.

Stefan left school last December and was becoming disillusioned in his attempts to find work with some companies not even responding to his applications.

He was advised by a friend to contact Rathbone, an organisation who work with young people to help them with their education or find training and employment opportunities.

They were able to get him the break he was looking for and give him the chance to show an employer what he can do.

Stefan was taken on by St Andrews based electrical contractors RB Grant who offered him a six month work placement.

"After leaving school l started looking for work straight away," Stefan said. "By March I still hadn't found anything and my mate kept telling me about Rathbone and how they can help out so I went along to see them."

"I was getting pretty fed up at that point as I had nothing to do really. I told them how much I wanted to be an electrician and they began looking for placements for me."

Rathbone contacted RB Grant in St Andrews who already had Stefan's uncle working with them. They were interested in taking him on but didn't want him to feel it was just as a favour to his uncle.

Ronnie Grant of RB Grant said: "We discussed it with him, gave him an interview and it went from there.

''We placed him with his uncle to start with and he went round some of our different projects to find out what the job is all about.

"He done really well and impressed us with his attitude so we got him back in for another interview and decided to offer him the apprenticeship."

Maria Collie of Rathbone is delighted at the progress Stefan has made.
She said: "He is a really nice young man, but he had done nothing since he left school and was fast becoming fed up.

''He learned some useful skills on the Get Ready for Work programme at Rathbone but it was a spell at RB Grant that really built-up his confidence and helped him achieve."

Anyone interested in learning more about Rathbone can contact their Fife office on 01592 623950.
